Information

The safaris are based at Macatoo Camp, situated on the western side of the Okavango Delta. Covering 17,000 km sq, the Okavango is the largest inland delta in the world, a mix of labyrinth channels, palm fringed islands and fertile floodplains.

Safari Camp Information

Macatoo, the Horseback Safari Camp, is situated on the western side of the Okavango Delta, Botswana. The riding terrain from camp is scenically varied in all directions.

Typically safaris are 7-nights or longer, enabling you to experience the Okavango in depth by staying out at our mobile fly-camp - weather permitting. Otherwise we recommend a minimum of 3 or 4-nights.

Safari Riding Information

We spend 4 to 6-hours a day in the saddle with groups of no more than 7 guests. You will need to feel confident about keeping up with the group, capable of riding at all paces; rising to the trot and controlling your horse at the canter.

We are always being asked "When is the best time to come?". As this is such a complicated issue with many variables such as weather, water levels and game we have compiled some guidelines to help you decide what suits you best!

How to get to Us

Most guests reach camp by flying from home to Maun via Johannesburg. Flights to Maun normally depart Joburg at 10am so you need to ensure that your international flight connects in order to avoid overnighting there.

What to Bring on Horse Safari

Luggage is limited to 20kgs (26lbs) per person, including hand luggage, in soft bags on the light aircraft into the Delta. Extra luggage can be stored in our Maun office.

How to Book Your Horse Riding Safari

It is possible to book through any of the specialist riding safari operators and agents who are also able to organise your flights and any additional lodges or camps to your itinerary as well as a riding safari.

Alternatively, read through our questionnaire carefully. If you are confidently able to tick one of the riding competence levels outlined, you can then check availability with Reservations in the Maun office. If you are in doubt as to whether you meet the required criteria, please contact Reservations who will be able to give you guidance on this.

Eco-Safari Dates

The Eco-Safaris are aimed at people who wish to actively participate in the conservation of the Okavango Delta and learn more about the flora and fauna that together form this totally unique eco-system. Dates are planned to coincide with seasonal and flood changes as the vegetation and movements of the animals change dramatically over these periods.

The duration is 5 days and depending on the number of participants the groups might be split to maximise data collection. There will also be opportunities for regular rides and activities during these safaris.

The above dates are blocked for Eco Safaris only but are based on a minimum group size is 4 participants. The cost of joining an Eco Safari would be GBP 250.00 per person in addition to normal safari rates. This is a conservation supplement and will go towards the research and monitoring project.
